Specimen Trees For The Home Garden

There are innumerable native trees that make beautiful garden specimen trees. Regardless of the size of the tree required, the physical condition (soil type, availability of water, amount of sun, aspect etc.) of the garden plot or types of flower or fruit desired, there is generally a native tree to fit the bill. Many small trees have been popular for a number of years, like the lilly pillies, flame tree and ivory curl, but there are many other suitable trees.

For those wanting a lovely shade tree with rounded canopy, the Red Kamala (Mallotus philippensis) may be worth looking at. For spectacular red, wheel-like flower heads in late summer, and glossy green leaves, the Wheel of Fire (Stenocarpus sinuatus) is recommended. Another tree with glossy green leaves but delicate pink and white flowers is the Deep Yellowwood (Rhodosphaera rhodanthema). If your garden soil is predominantly shale or sandstone, the Spotted Gum (Corymbia citriodora), with its attractive cream trunk that is almost orange as the old bark sheds, and fine, lance-like leaves, the Black Tea Tree (Melaleuca bracteata) with its white flowers that attract honeyeaters and butterflies or the Native Daphne (Pittosporum undulatum) with its perfumed white clusters of flowers might suit. Specimen trees that are clay tolerant include The Smooth Barked Apple (Angophora leiocarpa), Crow's Ash (Flindersia australis) and Native frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum).

Whether you want a drought-tolerant species, a tree with a weeping habit or one that acts as a windbreak, the nursery will have something suitable in stock.
